Have you ever wondered how Martin Luther's call for church reform grew into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)? Whether you have been Lutheran your entire life or are simply curious about our church's history and beliefs, Lutheran 101 offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and deepen your faith. In this new adult education class, we will journey through the story of Lutheranism, beginning with Martin Luther and the Reformation of the 16th century and continuing through the development of Lutheran churches in America to the formation of the ELCA in 1988.
Along the way, we will explore:
- Martin Luther's life and faith journey
- The central teachings of the Reformation
- The Lutheran Confessions and what they mean for us today
- The growth of Lutheranism in Europe and America
- The history of Lutheran churches in the United States
- The events that led to the creation of the ELCA
- How our Lutheran heritage continues to shape our congregation and ministry
This class is designed for everyone—longtime Lutherans, new members, and anyone interested in learning more about our faith tradition. There is no test, no homework, and no prior knowledge required—just a willingness to learn and engage in conversation.
